Negombo is a wonderful creation of nature. Negombo has several synonyms.
Negombo / Meepuraya
When Prince Dutugemunu was about to be born to Goddess Vehera, there is a large beehive was in Negombo area. And Goddess Vehera wanted to eat that beehive somehow. And the city where the beehive was discovered was "Meegomuwa", hence the name Negombo.
Nigumbalaya
It is the name used by King Maha Ravana, who was the Monster Gothrika Lankeshwaraya, for Negombo. The main shrine of King Maha Ravana was in Nigumbalaye or Negombo. Nigumbalaye means the holy reservoir.
Little Rome
It is also known as this name. This is because the majority of Roman Catholics are in Negombo.
Meegama
This name has also been used in history. The reason for this was that there were a large number of "Mee Trees" growing in the Negombo area. This can be accepted as true, as stated in the "Ayurveda Sanhitha Grantha", excellent quality honey can be found from the flowers of Mee. Obtained from Pollen.
The people of the four major religions and four races live here in extraordinary peace and harmony.
Hence, Negombo is the “City of Harmony“.
History of Negombo Municipal Council
During the colonial period i.e. AD on 04.01.1878, the English Government established the Negombo District Council for the convenience of their administrative affairs. But there were no elected representatives of the people. The Negombo Municipal Council was established on 01.01.1922 on the recommendations of the Soulbury Commission. Sri Lanka’s first trial before universal suffrage. “Mr. Vasala Mudali Alexander Edman Rajapaksa” is the first Chairman of Negombo Municipal Council. There were 8 city presidents from him till 1949. In 1949 AD, the Negombo Municipal Council became a Municipal Council. In 1950 AD, the first Mayor and council were appointed.

On 01.01.1988 Kochchikade Municipal Council area and part of Katana Municipal Council area was transferred to Negombo Municipal Council. In the year 2000, the jurisdiction of the Thalahena Peruwa Village Council (then belonging to the Wattala Regional Council) was transferred to the Negombo Municipal Council. Currently, Negombo Divisional Secretary’s jurisdiction and constituency jurisdiction are fully included in Negombo Municipality’s jurisdiction.
